Literacy is a cornerstone in your child's learning. Without the skills of reading, writing and speaking/listening your child will find other areas in school (and later life) tricky.
Here you can see what kinds of things we do in school, what you can do at home and some links to useful literacy websites. (More will appear on our useful linkspage throughout the year.)

Literacy Basic Skills
- Reading - It is vital that you read with your child on a daily basis. Where appropriate individual reading will take place with your child in school, however the larger focus is on shared and group reading. Your child will sometimes bring home a book they can read by themselves, at other times they will need adult support. Please comment in your child's home-school link book. We try to make reading fun and exciting in school and hope you will try to do the same at home. Set aside time to make reading a special part of the day. Read to your children as well. Look at road signs and words in other places like newspapers, the internet, or even the footie scores on a Saturday afternoon!
- Spelling - Your child is given regular spelling words that are personalised. These need to be learnt at home. Your child is given time to practice these words in school with their friends as well. When learning the words, be creative. They could write the word lots of times in different colours or with chalks and felts. You could make a crossword or wordsearch using tools online. - Writing - take a look at our VCOPS page to find out about how we help your child to improve their writing.
